Step-by-step

1.Audit the four essentials
Check what your space already offers for food, water, shelter and breeding.
2.Add year-round water
A shallow dish with stones, topped up and cleaned weekly, is enough.
3.Build a flowering sequence
Aim for something in flower every month your climate allows.
4.Add fruit and seed
Include berrying shrubs and leave seedheads standing over winter.
5.Create shelter
Leave a log pile, a dense shrub or an undisturbed corner of long grass.
6.Provide breeding space
Add nest boxes or bee habitat facing away from hot afternoon sun.
7.Reduce chemical inputs
Stop routine pesticide use and tolerate some leaf damage.
